The University of Peradeniya is the pioneering institution that initiated offering external degrees in the country since 1964. The Vision of the Centre is to provide equal opportunities for all aspiring to further their career goals. The Centre for Distance and Continuing Education was established on 09th April, 2007 keeping in line with the principles of Open and Distance Learning (ODC). The Centre conducts degree programmes in all three languages (Sinhala, Tamil and English) which caters to the learners of all ethnic groups from all parts of the country. At present, the Centre offers two Degree programmes; General Degree in Bachelor of Arts(BA) (External), Bachelor of Business Management(BBA) (External), three diploma progammes; Diploma in Management and Development, Diploma in Library and Information Services and Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Development and two certificate courses; Advanced Certificate in Laboratory Handling and Certificate Course in Basic Tamil.

Seminar Series of the BA (External) 100 level – 2019 batch will be held towards the end of December 2021 targeting 100 level examinations.
The students who have not paid the full course fee for the 100 level (Rs. 34000) are advised to complete the payment.

The University of Peradeniya appointed Dr. Rathnayake M. Abeyrathne the new Director of the Centre for Distance and Continuing Education. While adhering to Covid 19 health guidelines, he assumed duties in his post on the 4th of August 2021. He is a Senior Lecturer and a Medical Anthropologist and former Head of the Department of Sociology, University of Peradeniya. At the brief meeting, he mentioned that the vision for the Center during his tenure is to develop it as one of the Centers of excellence in Distance and Continuous Education in the country.
Online workshop on setting Open Book Take Home Examination organized by the Centre for distance & Continuing Education (CDCE) in collaboration with the Commonwealth Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) was conducted successfully for 3 days from 06.01.2021 to 08.01.2021.
CDCE organized a workshop on Curriculum Development for the Advanced Certificate Course in General English on 20th December 2020 at Board Room, Centre for Distance and Continuing Education, University of Peradeniya. Prof. Mallika Pinnawala – Director/CDCE, Prof. WMWGCSM Wickramasinghe – Deputy Director/CDCE, Academic staff of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Management also participated in the event.
CDCE organized a workshop to prepare syllabus for the Diploma course in Laboratory Handling on 01st November 2020 at Board Room, CDCE. Prof. Mallika Pinnawala – Director/CDCE, Dr. S Maheswaran – Deputy Director/CDCE, Academic staff of Faculty of Science and Faculty of Management also participated in the event.
CDCE organized a workshop to finalize the curriculum of the Diploma course in Computing and Electronics on 31st October 2020 at Board Room, CDCE. Prof. Mallika Pinnawala – Director/CDCE, Dr. S Maheswaran – Deputy Director/CDCE, Academic staff of the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Management participated in the event.
The CDCE held the Diploma awarding Ceremony for those who have completed the Diploma in Management & Development programme on 18th September 2020 at CDCE, University of Peradeniya. Deputy Vice Chancellor, Acting Registrar, Bursar and Librarian of the University of Peradeniya, Dean/ Faculty of Management, Prof. Mallika Pinnawala - Director/CDCE, Dr. S. Maheswaran – DD/ Training, Dr. P. Seelagama – DD/ Examination & Registration, Chairpersons of Board of Studies, Academic staff of faculties, Administrative & Financial staff of CDCE and Faculty of Management were present to grace the ceremony.
CDCE organized a workshop to develop course units of the proposed B.Ed programme of Early Childhood Care and Development External (ECDE) which is going to be offered through the CDCE, University of Peradeniya in collaboration with UNICEF Programme Office in Sri Lanka on 20th June 2020 at Board Room, CDCE.
