The University of Peradeniya is the pioneering institution that initiated offering external degrees in the country since 1964. The Vision of the Centre is to provide equal opportunities for all aspiring to further their career goals. The Centre for Distance and Continuing Education was established on 09th April, 2007 keeping in line with the principles of Open and Distance Learning (ODC). The Centre conducts degree programmes in all three languages (Sinhala, Tamil and English) which caters to the learners of all ethnic groups from all parts of the country. At present, the Centre offers two Degree programmes; General Degree in Bachelor of Arts(BA) (External), Bachelor of Business Management(BBA) (External), five diploma progammes; Diploma in Management and Development, Diploma in Library and Information Services, Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Development, Diploma in Laboratory Technology and Diploma in Computing and Electronics and two certificate courses; Advanced Certificate in Laboratory Handling and Certificate Course in Basic Tamil.

The deadline to accept applications for the Diploma in Computing and Electronics has been extended until February 15, 2024. The course fee can be paid in three installments: the first 50% upfront, followed by two 25% installments. The Centre for Distance and Continuing Education of the University of Peradeniya organized a Paduru patiya in July 2023 to enhance social interaction and mental health among its members.
The Centre for Distance and Continuing Education of the University of Peradeniya organized a certificate awarding ceremony for the candidates who competed two academic programmes on Advanced Certificate Course in Laboratory Handling and the Diploma in Management and Development respectively on 6th August 2023 at the Statistical and Computer Science’s Auditorium of the Faculty of Science. This event was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the Dean Faculty of Management, the Dean Faculty of Science, the Director of the CDCE and the Chairpersons, the Resources Persons of the said academic programmes and the Staff Members of the CDCE.
The Centre for Distance and Continuing Education organized an Orientation Programme on Diploma in Laboratory Technology at the Statistical and Computer Department's Theater of the University Peradeniya on 11the February 2023. Professor Teranace Madhujith,the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sanath Rajapaksha, the Dean, Faculty of Science, Professor Abey Rathnayake, the Director, CDCE, many other resource persons and Students participated in this event.

The Centre for Distance and Continuing Education (CDCE) of the University of Peradeniya held its 2019-2022 convocation for external graduands at the Mahinda Rajapaksha Auditorium of the National Cooperative Development Institute, Polgolla, on 12th December 2022. This was the eleventh convocation that the CDCE organized for its external graduands. This year 505 and 69 graduands have conferred the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Business Administration Degrees respectively. Professor GH. Peiris, the Chancellor of the University, Professor MD. Lamawansha, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor TWM. Madhujith, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University and the Deans, the Director of CDCE and all the Administrative Officers of the University of Peradeniya and all other invitees graced this graduation ceremony.
The Centre for Distance and Continuing Education Conducted workshop on maintaining health after the Covid 19th on 9th Nov. 2022. Dr. Nimal Karunasiri, former Commissioner of Ayurveda Western Province conducted the workshop.
The Centre for Distance and Continuing Education entered into a memorandum of understanding between the University of Peradeniya and World Vision Lanka to help the youth in the Walapane area to provide training in Computer and Electronics on 30 th Sep 2022. The acting Vice-Chancellor, professor Athula Ekanayake, Director CDCE Professor Abey Rathnayake, Dean Faculty of Science, Professor Sanath Rajapaksha, Professor Authula Perera,Mr. Prabath Gunathilake from the University of Peradeniye and Mr. Shiron Perara and Mr. Anthony Lawarance participated from World Vision Lanka in the ceremony.

The Centre for Distance and Continuing Education of the University of Peradeniya, Conducted a Diploma and Certificate awarding Ceremony for Diploma in Management and Development and Advanced Certificate Course in Laboratory Handling on 3 rd November 2022 at the Centre for Distance and Continuing Education. The Centre awarded Diploma and Certificate to 66 students who completed the respective academic programmes.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya Prof. M.D. Lamawansa and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Terrance Madhujith graced the occasion as chief guests. Also, the Deans and Academic members of the Faculty of Management and the Faculty of Science, Director and administrative officers of the CDCE participated in this event. The CDCE congratulates the awardees on their achievement.
The Center for Distance and Continuing Education signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Women Child Development Affairs of the Government of Sri Lanka on 29th August 2022 and this enables the students who follow the Diploma Programme in Early Childhood Care and Development to receive financial assistance to complete their academic programme.
The CDCE organized an awareness programme for the resource persons of the Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Development at the Department of Education, University of Peradeniya on 11th June 2002. The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Director/ CDCE, Head/Education, professor Mudiyanse Rasnayake, Unicef Officer and other staff members of the Department of Education and resource persons participated in this programme.
The CDCE organized an orientation programme for the Diploma in Management and Development course 2022/23 via zoom on 10th June 2002. The Director CDCE/ Dean/Management and other resource persons and CDCE staff participated in this event.
The CDCE organised an orientation programme for the Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Development on 27th May 2022 at the Centre's Main Hall. The Vice-Chancellor of the university of Peradeniya, professor M.D. Lawansa participated as the chief guest of the event. In addition, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the acting Dean/Faculty of Arts, Dean/ Managemengemt, Dean/Science, Head and the academic staff of the Department of Education, CDCE administrative staff and students from many parts of the island participated in this event.
The CDCE conducted a tree planting activity to mark the National Independence Day, 4th February 2022. The Director and Staff participated in this event.

The University of Peradeniya appointed Dr. Rathnayake M. Abeyrathne the new Director of the Centre for Distance and Continuing Education. While adhering to Covid 19 health guidelines, he assumed duties in his post on the 4th of August 2021. He is a Senior Lecturer and a Medical Anthropologist and former Head of the Department of Sociology, University of Peradeniya. At the brief meeting, he mentioned that the vision for the Center during his tenure is to develop it as one of the Centers of excellence in Distance and Continuous Education in the country.
Online workshop on setting Open Book Take Home Examination organized by the Centre for distance & Continuing Education (CDCE) in collaboration with the Commonwealth Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) was conducted successfully for 3 days from 06.01.2021 to 08.01.2021.
